Starting with international relations during the Silk Route period, around 1,500 to 2,000 years ago, we can trace how people in the region embraced foreign trade, developing a rich economy and culture with influences spanning from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Turning to current affairs, the condition and treatment of archaeological artifacts over the past 50 years—including her work over the past 20 years—offers insight into the modern state of the nation with a hopeful eye to the future.

The evening will begin with a reception and refreshments with Dr. Watts' lecture to follow at 6:30. Free and open to the public.

About your lecturer: 

Dr. Watts has pursued her work in cultural heritage across many fields. As a field archaeologist, Watts has excavated on sites in the UK, USA, Turkey, Afghanistan, Rapa Nui, and Egypt. The art and objects of civilizations narrowed her specialism to material culture as an objects conservator, first studying at University College London, then working in museum collections around the world, such as the Museum of London, the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, Chedworth Roman Villa, the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul, and the Poe Museum of Richmond, VA.
