- **Event Name**: Lecture—Art on the Borderline: Aesthetic Experience and the Making of Public Art
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 09 Jul, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Thu, 09 Jul, 2026 at 07:30 pm
- **Event Description**: For the American philosopher John Dewey (1859–1952), democracy is a product of aesthetic experience. As the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and with the 67th Midwestern Exhibition, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” as the backdrop, you are invited to join in an evening of art and conversation, considering the conditions under which both art and democracy either falter or flourish, how art can respond to social problems, and how democratic communities emerge from shared aesthetic experience. The evening will include presentations by Noni Brynjolson and Jonathan Rutter, as well as time to engage in a community conversation with American philosophy scholars and other participants of the Summer Institute in American Philosophy, which will be taking place at Concordia College on July 6-11.

This event is open to the public beginning at 6:00. Remarks begin at 6:30.
