In the beautiful fishing village of Johnshaven - North East Scotland. Just want to work small? …and experience the same mercurial coastline as the late, legendary Joan Eardley? This course provides the opportunity to work in a concertina sketchbook, as well as a selection of mini boards or canvas, to create a series of sea-themed keepsakes. • Work outside by the sea ‘en plein air’ (weather permitting), or in a cosy and spacious studio. • Be inspired by fresh coastal views and sea-themed still life. • Gather sketches, ideas and studies to create a series of mini works. • Capture village sites, sea waves, light and shoreline. • Explore, investigate and experiment with mixed media materials and techniques. • Relax and meet like-minded people. With a plethora of materials on hand, use different surfaces and supports to: • Wash, blot, bleed, blend and resist with ink. • Fade, reduce, lift and soften with powder. • Scratch and score into oil mediums. • Spread, drag, push and draw into plaster. • Texture with sea grass, salt, seaweed, sand or small stones. Choose great keepsake ideas such as hanging diptychs, triptchs, mini easels and magnetic canvases. There are thought provoking contrasts to depict on the Johnshaven shoreline; with ocean waves breaking against it's volcanic rock, flowers and seagrass, ever changing skies and sea. Working en plein air enriches your senses. Just down the coast from Catterline, you will find the same extraordinary elements that Eardley responded to on her canvas, and that inspire many practicing artists today such as Cook and MacFarlane. £350 4 Day Course: 23 - 26 July 2026 Thurs, Frid, Sat 10am-5pm Sun 10am-4:30pm Johnshaven has been a much loved home for Rebecca for 35 years. As always, tuition will be tailored to the level of each individual. Everyone is welcome. Beginners through to advanced. All materials and equipment provided including a concertina sketchbook, selection of mini supports (boards or canvas). En plein air equipment: travel easel and large folding director’s chair/table and studio equipment: easel/table/workspace supplied. Tea/coffee/light refreshments provided. Johnshaven is a great place to visit and has three great venues serving food: The Anchor Hotel Restaurant. Hidden Treasure Tearoom and The Lobster Shop.
