# Event Details - **Event Name**: Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From - **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 30 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Sun, 01 Nov, 2026 at 01:00 pm (-04:00) - **Event Description**: The time of Halloween is often described as the time when the veil between worlds is the thinnest. We are going to spend the weekend taking advantage of that possibility, using sound to connect more deeply with those on the other side, on whose shoulders we stand. The weekend runs across Halloween and into the Day of the Dead. What we come from is usually a mixed bag. Our ancestry may evoke both gratitude and grief, reverence and rage, a heart that is singing and a body that is bracing. This weekend has room for all of it. Why sound rather than a talking circle? Unlike talking, music allows us to express without having to take a position. The gratitude and the difficulty can exist together and be felt and acknowledged beyond words. If you can walk, you can play. No musical experience needed. This is sound improvisation. Drums, keyboards, whatever else people bring, and voices. You will drum, play and sing what is actually present, rather than learning anyone else's music. Friday evening we open the circle and each person sounds what they have brought with them. Saturday moves from storytelling with the instruments answering, through solo time out on the land, into a co-creation of a ritual which will be enacted on Halloween night. Sunday morning is a long stretch of playing together, and we will close out our time together with a closing circle. The weekend is open to any adult. Therapists, healers and health practitioners are especially welcome, particularly people working in recovery, nervous system regulation and trauma healing. ABOUT THE FACILITATOR: Daniel Barber runs Tune U, a practice of improvisational sound. He helps people sit down at a piano or a drum, play what they are actually feeling, and find their way back to themselves in about ten minutes. In the midst of deep grief around the dissolution of his second marriage in 2000, he discovered something unexpected and transformative at the piano. The sound answered back. He has spent his life holding rooms where sound happens. Years of large drum circles, including the Asheville Drum Circle. Twenty years leading the house band at Jubilee! Community every Sunday. Twelve with Asheville Playback Theatre as musician and actor, playing true stories back on the spot. Thirteen leading the events band Current Invention. Sixteen telling nonprofit stories on video. All of it came after a career in quantitative statistics and PhD studies in international development, food distribution and social movements. That line is straighter than it looks. It has all been one question: how change happens, and how a person takes part in it. He is certified in wilderness-based rites of passage through the Rites of Passage Council, and ordained as a Minister of Music and Ritual through Jubilee! Community. He lives and plays in western North Carolina. - **Event URL**: https://allevents.in/montreat/sounding-through-the-veil-sound-and-ritual-with-the-ones-we-come-from/200030785015329 - **Event Categories**: Music, Entertainment, Art, Theatre, health-wellness - **Interested Audience**: - total_interested_count: 0 ## Ticket Details ## Event venue details - **city**: Montreat - **state**: NC - **country**: United States - **location**: 1130 Montreat Rd - **lat**: 35.63454 - **long**: -82.31573 - **full address**: 1130 Montreat Rd, 1130 Montreat Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711-3232, United States, Montreat ## Event gallery - **Alt text**: Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From - **Image URL**: https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events2/banners/f1bdeb8701fbaa7dddf2e0fe59567809867250c31c1b254a5e0cb599ba86634a-rimg-w1200-h480-dc080808-gmir?v=1791275969 ## FAQs - **Q**: When and where is Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From being held? - **A:** Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From takes place on Fri, 30 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm to Sun, 01 Nov, 2026 at 01:00 pm at 1130 Montreat Rd, 1130 Montreat Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711-3232, United States, Montreat. - **Q**: Who is organizing Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From? - **A:** Sounding Through The Veil: Sound and Ritual With The Ones We Come From is organized by Quietude Retreat Center. - **Q**: Who is this event for?
