Montreal has a vibrant presence of theatre and performing arts. It is one of the biggest cultural hubs, not only in Canada, but in the world. Divided by language but united by craft, Montreal has some of the best and oldest theatre companies. Whether it is English, French, or the newly popular, bilingual companies, live theatre Montreal draws people from all over the world. For artists and spectators alike, theatres in Montreal are the testimony of a rich and cultural heritage of the city. It is referred to as Canada's Cultural Capital and is dominated by French spoken production houses however, the English theatre has captured it's fair share over the years.
Being the cultural hub of Montreal thrives on and is proud of its theatrical performances. Those who are interested in Montreal performing arts can visit Centaur Theatre Company, which is situated in old stock and is one of the oldest theatres, since 1969. Centaur Theatre has been at the heart of English theatre in Montreal with its various annual classics, Broadway and musicals in Montreal, monologue series and kids live theatre. A French counterpart L’infusart, not only trains adults and children in the art of theatre but also have in-house painting classes for all levels. Then there is the National Theatre School Of Canada (NTS) and Segal Center for Performing Arts. These training centers, since the past five decades, have been training English and French professionals in all trades of theatre. NTS not only has professional courses but public workshops as well where anyone between the age of 15 and 115 can come and participate. They also organize an annual festival showcasing in-house talents but NTS’s Monument National is a must-see building, the oldest theatre in Quebec, which is still in use.
Canada hosts hundreds of film festivals, each year; out of which few of the most famous ones are hosted in Montreal, namely, Fantasia International Film Festival, Cinemania and Montreal World Film Festival. The World Film Festival is, of course, one of the oldest, where you can catch screenplays and world premiers from various parts of the world. Fantasia, on the other hand, is famous for being a genre film festival, which has seen some big premiers over the last few years. Cinemania is a francophone festival which over the past 24 years has seen exponential popularity. If you are a movie buff, French or not, missing this festival surmounts to a crime as most of the screenings are premiers with English subtitles.
Films alike, theatre festivals are also equally bedazzling in Montreal. Other than the big production houses, theatre companies like the Wildside Theatre Festival and theatre hubs like Place des Arts, there are a few more workshops, musicals and shows that you can look out for in Montreal. Montreal’s Fringe Festival is one of them, which is an international celebration of multidisciplinary arts. Based on the philosophy of freedom and equality, the Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival has gained huge popularity in the last decade. Another summer favourite is Shakespeare in the Park, where Montreal's Repercussion Theater puts on shows featuring Shakespearean works. Other theatre companies like MainLine and Black Theatre, Hudson Village Theatre, and many more organise intriguing workshops.
