Participants for this year’s Spirit Walk will meet at 1pm at the Monument to George-Étienne Cartier on Parc Avenue at the base of Mount Royal (registration opens @ 12PM). Participants will then walk a loop of around 5km together, accompanied by drumming and singing of local Indigenous artists.

The goal for this year’s Spirit Walk is to raise 50,000$ leading up to June 13th, 2026 in order to support the operations of the NWSM and the annual NWSM healing retreat.

This year’s Spirit Walk centers on the theme Indigenous Rising, highlighting Indigenous youth and their vital role in cultural revitalization. As stewards of their heritage, Indigenous youth carry forward traditions, languages, and stories while shaping new paths for their communities.

Across many Indigenous communities, there is a growing movement to reclaim cultural identities, rights, sovereignty, and traditions. In the face of ongoing social, political, justice, and environmental challenges, Indigenous peoples continue to advocate for recognition and self-determination.

There is a need to create spaces where Indigenous youth can express their voices, share their ideas, and offer insights into how communities can best support them. Listening to their perspectives is crucial in developing programs that resonate with their experiences and aspirations, ensuring that these initiatives are culturally grounded and relevant.

The Spirit Walk serves as a vital fundraising event for the Native Women’s Shelter’s annual Healing Retreat. This retreat is an opportunity for women and children to come together in a supportive and restorative environment. It fosters healing, strength, connection, and empowerment among participants.

During the week-long retreat, attendees benefit from the support and guidance from knowledge keepers, elders and facilitators from surrounding Indigenous communities. This retreat creates a space where families can share experiences, engage in traditional healing and learn from one another, promoting intergenerational healing and bonding.

By participating in the Spirit Walk, you help support this retreat. The funds raised contribute to various activities, including workshops, traditional ceremonies, and other activities that foster a sense of belonging and community.

The Spirit Walk is an awareness campaign that fosters solidarity within the community. We encourage attendees to reflect on the historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities. By engaging thoughtfully and respectfully, you can contribute to the positive change and recognition that Indigenous communities seek.
