"Rethinking the explosive-effusive transition in silicic eruptions"
According to established thinking, a volcanic eruption may be either explosive or effusive in style, with initially violent activity generally giving way to gentler emplacement of lava. However, recent observations of a number of silicic eruptions, most notably Chilean rhyolites (Fig. 1), have challenged this framing, with the realisation that explosive pyroclastic venting may accompany much or all of the supposedly effusive phase. This demands reappraisal of the nature of explosive and effusive activity [1], and the controlling conduit processes.
In this presentation we will overview evidence for this mixed (hybrid) eruption style, examine the geological signature of hybrid activity in pyroclastic deposits, lava flows [2], and dissected conduits [3], and appraise the implications for volcanic hazard assessment and volcanic outgassing.
