Empanadas Ilegales is a Vancouver-based tropical psychedelic ensemble known for genre-bending compositions and kinetic live performances.

Formed in 2017 by musicians with roots in Colombia, Argentina, and Canada, the group merges Latin American traditions with surf rock, free jazz, and experimental psychedelia.

Their 2025 album Sancocho Trifásico put them on the map internationally, earning a Bandcamp Daily feature, a Songlines review, CBC radio play, and festival appearances at FME, Calgary Folk Music Festival, and the Montréal International Jazz Festival. Far Out Magazine named it one of five 21st-century cumbia masterpieces, writing that the band is “not only carrying the torch of that legendary cumbia sound into the modern age, but adapting and adding to the sound in a way that will keep the scene moving organically.”
