Dan Miron: A Traveler Undisguised - Mendele Moykher Sforim
Tickets: (514) 345-6416
2017 marks the 100th yortsayt of famed Yiddish author Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh (1836-1917) — better known by his pseudonym, Mendele Moykher Sforim, Mendele the Book Peddler. To commemorate this anniversary of one of Hebrew and Yiddish literature’s major figures, esteemed literary scholar Professor Dan Miron presents a lecture on the essence of Abramovitsh’s historical achievement, one which enabled him to redefine the courses of both Hebrew and Yiddish Literature. Miron will focus on his message of modernity as it was indirectly conveyed through the innocent causerie delivered by what seemed to be an old fashioned shtetl book peddler. He will chart the passage of the undisguised traveler and point to the rigorous intellectual journey he took upon himself throughout the six decades of that author's extended career.
Dan Miron, the premier scholar and critic of Yiddish and Hebrew literature, is the Leonard Kaye Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. He is the author of more than twenty books, in both Hebrew and English. His books include The Prophetic Mode in Modern Hebrew Poetry (2009) and A Traveler Disguised: The Rise of Modern Yiddish Fiction in the Nineteenth Century (1972), which was hailed as a trail-blazing new understanding of the dynamics of Yiddish literature. Among many prizes, he has received the Bialik Prize for Jewish thought, the Israel Prize for Hebrew literature, as well as the Manger Prize for the study of Yiddish literature.
