But at the scale of a city, that simple answer gets complicated fast.Air conditioning can protect people during dangerous heat, but it also pushes more demand onto the energy system, releases more waste heat into the urban environment, and risks treating symptoms while the deeper causes keep getting worse. If every building solves heat on its own, the city can end up with a bigger systems problem.In this talk, Ursula Eicker explores why cities should not just air-condition their way out of urban heat. Drawing on her work in urban energy systems, zero-carbon cities, district heating and cooling, and city-scale simulation, she will explain what smarter cooling can look like: better buildings, integrated energy networks, storage, planning, renewable systems, and urban design that reduces heat at the source.Expect a clear, practical, and accessible look at one of the defining urban challenges of a warming world, followed by discussion and Q&A.
