While workshop 1 started in the Golden Age of jazz, this 7th edition brings us to the early 2000s concert & party scene. Come hear first hand stories from DJ and concert promoter, Rickey D.! Under the guidance of artist Hasina Kamanzi, we will create pages for a collaborative zine inspired by these stories, using scanned flyers, photos, and posters from ARCMTL’s archive. Events has been putting on concerts and parties in Montreal for nearly forty years. From legends such as Run DMC in the mid 1980s to countless reggae, ragga, funk, rnb and hip-hop shows since then, Rickey D. has helped keep Montreal nightlife so alive and thriving.Hasina Kamanzi’s work explores Black cultures and identities through the fusion of science fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentric themes. She uses the visual language of Afrofuturism to reimagine the world, create new narratives, and challenge the status quo. Her art seeks to empower and inspire Black people to see themselves in new ways while disrupting oppressive systems.
