The SPOMA Committee Presents: Our 6th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in Honor of Black History Month

The SPOMA Committee is proud to announce Our 6th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in celebration of Black History Month, to be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

The celebration will begin at 11:00 am at Montgomery Town Hall, located at 110 Bracken Road, Montgomery, NY, with doors opening at 10:30 am for community fellowship and informal gathering. At 12:00 pm, attendees can take part in a procession to the Sacred Place of My Ancestors, located across from Medline Industries, 494 State Route 416 in Montgomery, NY 12549.
This annual wreath laying ceremony honors the enduring contributions and living experience of African Americans and Indigenous Peoples, recognizing their vital role in the history and our community through ceremony and celebration.  The event offers space for reflection, remembrance, and healing while fostering unity, community connection, and shared commitment to “Becoming a Better Ancestor” together.

Presented in partnership with The Town of Montgomery and Valley Central High School’s Cultural Diversity Club and Le Vonne Inspirations Florist, the SPOMA Committee invites the entire community to attend and participate in this meaningful observance.

Procession: 

Time: 12:00pm
Location: Sacred Place of My Ancestors, 494 State Route 416, Montgomery NY 12549 (across from Medline Industries).
Following the ceremony at Town Hall, participants will proceed together (via your own vehicle) to the Sacred Place of My Ancestors, where a wreath will be laid in honor of the African Americans and Indigenous individuals whose legacies continue to shape the region. This ceremony will include remarks from community leaders and educators, highlighting the significance of Black History Month and reaffirming a collective responsibility to preserve this history for future generations.

“The Town of Montgomery has taken a leadership role that will begin in Orange County. In a dynamic and permanent fashion that will allow our descendants to be proud that we are on the right side of history — the side of history that chooses to keep all Americans connected with each other and cares to keep everyone connected,” said Kyle Conway, member of the SPOMA Committee. 
Now in its sixth year, this annual tradition continues to grow as a space for remembrance, solidarity, and hope. The SPOMA Committee encourages all community members to attend and take part in honoring the resilience, contributions, and history of Black and Indigenous Peoples.

About The SPOMA Committee:
The SPOMA Committee (Sacred Place of My Ancestors) is a community-based organization dedicated to embracing a rich and culturally inclusive history of all Americans. 
We aim to uncover the missing history of the Black and Indigenous Natives here in the Town of Montgomery and of the Greater Hudson Valley. Our goal is to create a legacy of remembrance and continuance for the Sacred Place of My Ancestors. Through historical findings, development of curriculum, community education, and cultural celebration, we seek to transmit knowledge to future generations and to recreate a more accurate and inclusive narrative of our history. We strive to promote cross-cultural dialogue and exchange for people of all colors and nationalities to engender a more united and harmonious Hudson Valley.

We invite the community to join us in recognizing the profound legacies of Black and Indigenous peoples, especially during Black History Month, as we continue our work to promote connection, community, and remembrance.
