I have been working with leather for over 10 years and teaching leather tooling to my high school art students for 8 years.
I have experimented with any number of processes but will forever be learning. Leather tooling is a very rewarding hobby as you can make many beautifully functional objects using leather. However the tools needed are pricey. I would like to offer my studio space and accumulated tools so that you can enjoy this experience without that financial investment.
Leather Crafting Workshop: you bring the leather, and accesories. Tandy leather in Des Moines has kits for just about anything you could want to make. Their location is right of I-80 at 5041 NE 14th St, Des Moines, IA 50313.
You can also order from any leather supply online resource, I have found that Tandy is an inexpensive option. If you are wanting to make something from scratch or an idea you found online I can advise you on what weight of leather and accessories you will need to purchase. Tandy also has very knowledgeable employees who will help you put together everything you need for your project if you visit their store in person.
I have many (but not all) stamps for tooling leather, swivel knives for handtooling, mallets and cutting tools. Multiple letter and number stamps in a variety of sizes and styles, hole punches for sewing, and accessories for applying snaps or rivets. I have Basic Dyes and threads for sewing. But if you want a certain color, snap or rivet you should purchase it with your leather. Most details will come with your kit if you choose to purchase one otherwise I have the essentials.
Leather tooling is not an easy artform, it takes patience, practice and attention to detail. That said, I have shared this artform with students from age 12 and up who have all been able to create small goods that they are proud of and use. I will be there to assist and advise you as you work independently on creating your item.
I hope that by offering open studio times in November and then again in December that those interested will be able to complete any projects they wish to make before the holiday. You can sign up for a half day for $40.00 per person: 3 hrs in the am 9-12, or 3 hrs in the pm from 1-4, or a full day for $60.00 with an hour lunch break. I am providing 3 sessions, come to as many as you need to complete your project. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at tooling leather, or creating your own earrings, or other small leather goods, this is your opportunity. I look forward to working with you.
