📖 Dive Site History: The Story Beneath the Surface
San Carlos Beach, at the west end of Cannery Row, is steeped in a fascinating history. In the early 1900s, it was at the heart of Monterey’s booming sardine industry, which earned the city the title Sardine Capital of the World. The breakwater, built in 1934, was vital to protecting the harbor’s bustling fishing operations.
After the sardine fishery collapsed in the 1950s, the canneries fell silent—but the underwater world flourished. Today, the submerged relics of this industrial past—old pipes, pilings, and barges—serve as artificial reefs, home to an astonishing variety of marine life. The Breakwater is now one of the most dived and beloved sites in the state.
