The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians will host their annual Powwow on October 12 2024 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Old Santee Canal Park. Grand Entry will be at 12 p.m. The event which is open to the public will include drumming dancing singing demonstration artist and vendors.
Admission for the event is $10. Children under six years old and adults 65 and over get free admission. Members of the Tribe will get a $2 discount by showing their tribal cards. This is a family event with no outside food or drinks permitted. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own chairs. The event is being sponsored in part by the SC Arts Commission.
Bad Boyz will be the Host Drum and Warpaint Singers will be the Guest Drum. Kaya Littleturtle will serve as the master of ceremonies. Michael Muckelvaney will be Head Man Dancer and Sierra Russell will be Head Lady Dancer at the event. Over $2400 in Cash Prizes will be given out in Dance Competitions this year.
Event activities include:
• More than 35 vendors offering a wide variety of food and crafts.
• Marsh Tacky horse exhibition with discussions on the breed and how they tie into tribal history. There will also be rides.
• Children’s area with sweets and jump castles. Charlie the River Dog mascot of the Charleston RiverDogs will be making an appearance from 11 a.m.-noon.
• Nancy Basket a Native American Storyteller and Folk Artist will be a featured demonstrator.
• Keith “Little Bear” Brown Master Catawba Potter and storyteller will be demonstrating Catawba pottery traditions.
• Visit a new temporary exhibit inside the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center. Catawba Pottery will be on loan to the Berkeley Museum during the powwow from the USCL's Native Studes Center.
