- **Event Name**: The Lost City of Mabila A 500 Year Old Mystery in Alabama
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 23 Feb, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Mon, 23 Feb, 2026 at 07:00 pm
- **Event Description**: One of the bloodiest battles in early North American history may have happened right here in Alabama.

And we still have not found the exact site.

Join us at Red Beard’s Outfitter on February 23 at 6:00 PM as Dr. Ashley Dumas, Professor of Anthropology at the University of West Alabama, shares the latest discoveries in the 500 year search for Mabila, the fortified Native American town where Hernando de Soto and Chief Tuskaloosa clashed in 1540.

This was no small skirmish. Thousands of Native warriors. Hundreds of Spanish soldiers. A walled fortress set on fire. A battle so fierce it changed the course of de Soto’s expedition and reshaped the future of European exploration in the Southeast.

Dr. Dumas and her team have uncovered Chief Tuskaloosa’s territorial province in Marengo County, including 141 Native American farmsteads and rare 16th century Spanish artifacts. Each discovery brings us closer to solving one of Alabama’s greatest historical mysteries.

Could the battlefield be just miles away from where these artifacts were found

Come see excavation photos. Hear the story from the archaeologist leading the search. Ask questions. Be part of the discovery.
