A Texas native, he earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Prairie View A&M University. His work has significantly shaped Black theatre in the United States, including his leadership as the former Artistic Director of Karamu House in Cleveland and as the founder of Powerful Long Ladder, a theatre company dedicated to amplifying Black voices.Spivey gained national recognition for his play An Ocean in My Bones, which tells the story of the survivors of the Clotilda slave ship voyage and was developed in Africatown, Mobile, Alabama.
