Davey Whitcraft "An Elemental Sleep: Six Failures"

Opening: “An Elemental Sleep: Six Failures”. What does it say about places where nothing seems to be left but silence and deformed time?
July 25 6 pm at the Užupio Meno Inkubatoriaus gallery (Užupio g. 2A) you are invited to the opening of the exhibition "An Elemental Sleep: Six Failures" by the interdisciplinary artist Davey Whitcraft – a video sound and sculpture installation about erased industrial memory geological discontinuities and the delayed effects left by materials.
The installation was born out of field research in Lithuania - at the Kazlų Rūda military airfield the Baltosios Vokės peat bog and other sites affected by mining erosion and decay. Here slow damage infrastructural remnants and durations of matter are recorded which in the artist's words “remain in the altered soil”.
At the centre of the exhibition is the lithium. Not only a metal but also a signal of the planet's disorientation. It becomes a link between the colonial past the remnants of post-Soviet infrastructure and a speculative “green” future. The project is inspired by thinking about layered time which is not solved by linear chronologies. This uneven time forms timescapes - ecologically geologically and technologically rethought durations that lie not only in memory but also on the surface in the air in the soil.
“Elemental Sleep turns to mineral time – to the deep registers of matter shaped by extraction accumulation and decay while meaning is formed through spatial rhythm and perceptual wanderings” - Whitcraft.
The exhibition invites us to pause listen and let matter speak. Not through narrative but through texture pressure sound.
Location: Užupis Art Incubator gallery (Užupio st. 2A)
Opening of the exhibition: July 25 6 pm
The exhibition is open until 22 August.
Gallery opening hours III-VI 13:00-18:00
The author: Davey Whitcraft
Curator of the exhibition: Gretė Ona Tvarkūnaitė
Exhibition manager: Ieva Muliuolytė
