Hot Takes - A Critical Writing Workshop

Join us to write about what you love. 

Ever get obsessed with a new show but have no one to discuss it with? Or find yourself picking apart a hyped film or discovering a hidden meaning in that summer hit? We all carry strong opinions about the media we consume but sometimes struggle to put those feelings into words.

In this workshop you’ll craft an essay on a piece of media or cultural moment that matters to you. We’ll break down the writing process step by step explore what makes essays compelling and practice these strategies together.

Open to anyone looking to sharpen their writing skills—especially if you find it hard to express your thoughts or get overwhelmed when starting to write. We’ll read examples of cultural criticism discuss key writing principles and guide you through drafting your own piece. You’ll leave with a draft new insights into your process and the confidence to express your ideas clearly.


Facilitator:

Devi Sastry (she/her) is a writer teacher and editor from Bengaluru. Her life and her work revolve around food family and multilingualism. She holds an MFA in poetry from New York University and she has taught creative and critical writing at NYU and Montclair State University. Her writing has been published or is forthcoming in Wasafiri Dhoop magazine Poetry Northwest Honey literary and Bengaluru Review among other publications. She’s currently working as an Educational Arm Assistant at Asymptote Journal.
