Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut (1979)

This August, the Drexel Theatre presents a program dedicated to one of America’s filmmaking legends with “Francis Ford Coppola: Beyond Godfather.” Focusing on Coppola’s work outside of his seminal gangster trilogy, we’re screening two ’70s masterpieces, an underloved ’80s curio, and a gothic ’90s spectacle.
APOCALYPSE NOW: THE FINAL CUT: Coppola’s hallucinatory Vietnam epic returns to the big screen in a cut that combines both the 1979 theatrical release and the 2001 Redux version, creating a film that represents the director’s intended vision. Martin Sheen stars as Captain Willard, who travels deep into the jungles of Vietnam to locate Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a rogue colonel who has created his own jungle sanctuary. This unsettling exploration of war, madness, and moral decay costars Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Laurence Fishburne, Sam Bottoms, Scott Glenn, Harrison Ford (in a small cameo), and Dennis Hopper in one of his most manic performances.
