White Pine Hike with Sugar Pine Foundation

The Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring native pine forests in the Tahoe Region and beyond. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) serves as the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail System, ensuring its protection and accessibility. Together, our organizations collaborate to offer engaging educational experiences along the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin.

Come meet the western white pine—a towering emblem of the American West, distinguished by its soft needles and stately presence. This remarkable tree is more than just a forest giant; it’s a resilient survivor, facing threats from logging, urban development, and the challenges of a changing climate. An introduced fungus has devastated many western white pines west of the Cascades, making Tahoe a vital stronghold for this majestic species.

Join tree specialist Edric Alvarez as he shares the Sugar Pine Foundation’s efforts to protect and restore the western white pine. Edric will lead a guided hike along the Tahoe Rim Trail, where you’ll have the opportunity to see stunning examples of these magnificent trees and learn about their crucial role in the ecosystem.

Come hike with us, enjoy beautiful views of Carson Valley and deepen your understanding of forest ecology, conservation, and the enduring beauty of Tahoe’s white pines!
