PAPER TELEPHONE: a collaboration between artists Sarah Wolfe & Coleman Stevenson
Paper Telephone is a show filled with colorful copies and disembodied “exquisite corpses.” A recent series of oil pastel drawings by Wolfe is reinterpreted by Stevenson as a series of corresponding monotypes, resulting in companion pieces in the midst of strange conversations-- sometimes a reduction to minimal syllables, sometimes a slurred slide into misconception. Like translating a language you don’t know, or receiving a transmission that has passed through multiple receivers, the results are inevitably inverted and distorted, yet something of the original essence sneaks in. Stevenson and Wolfe also present three interconnected pieces modeled after the Surrealists’ cadavre exquis parlor game, but their unlikely aggregates are made of landscapes, elements, and seasons rather than heads and limbs.
Paper Telephone is on view July 4th through August 30th, with the following special events:
Opening Reception on Friday, August 1, 5pm-8pm EDT
Artist Talk on Thursday, August 21, 6:30pm EDT
