We have a very interesting date for your diary for all you history enthusiasts! Nicholas St Aubyn is coming to Pencarrow on Tuesday 9th October to give a talk on Saints and Sinners, his family history!

He will focus on the period when four generations of the St Aubyns of St Michael's Mount and Molesworths of Pencarrow families became bonded by inheritance, marriage and politics.

The first half of his talk will describe the political battle between Sir Robert Walpole and his arch enemy Sir John St Aubyn 3rd Bt. Walpole famously complained that "all men have their price except the little Cornish Baronet".

He will reveal how the notorious "Skewis Affair", Sir John's triumph at the fall of Walpole and a secret Jacobite plot with France in one of the most extraordinary episodes in British and Cornish history!

In the second half, Nicholas will portray the colourful life of his grandson the 5th Sir John, whose marriage to a farmer's daughter shocked Cornish society and later became the inspiration for the characters Ross and Demelza Poldark.

As well as 14 children of his own, Sir John showed great affection for Hender Molesworth, the nephew to whom he left a sizeable fortune, including the many St Aubyn portraits now hanging at Pencarrow today.

Sit back and relax in our beautiful Drawing Room and enjoy Nicholas St Aubyn's time travel through history. Enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles in the interval.

Nicholas will then be signing copies of his book, Saints and Sinners, which will be on sale.

This is a Friends of Pencarrow event and all proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the upkeep of this beautiful house.

Tickets are £10 per person (includes a glass of wine and nibbles). They will be available from our website very soon. Tickets are limited so don't hang around!
