Millions of people have welcomed moves to found a new left party. As Labour and Reform UK scapegoat refugees and boost fascist violence, a new left could say clearly, “blame the rich, not migrants” and help mobilise against the far right. It could mount serious resistance against the bosses, the war-mongers and bigots …

But we need to learn the lessons of Syriza in Greece or Podemos in the Spanish state. They spoke of both “elections” and “struggles”—but, in the end, prioritised winning elections. When they reached government, they conceded to the bosses and bankers, moved rightward—and failed.

We can use electoral politics to champion struggle and raise working class people’s confidence to resist. But the battles in the streets and picket lines, over Palestine, racism, trans+ rights and austerity all matter most when it comes to winning change and defeating the system.
