Homeschool Program: River Exploration

Put on your water shoes and get ready to explore the wonders of the French Broad River! In this hands-on program, kids will learn about aquatic life and water quality by using dip nets and searching under rocks to hopefully find fish, insects, snails, and more in the shallow shoals of the river. There will also be a ranger with a seine net which kids can help use to find all sorts of cool creatures from the river!

Park staff will guide young explorers as they investigate what lives beneath the surface and how those creatures help us understand the health of the river. This is a great opportunity to learn about aquatic ecosystems while splashing around and having fun!

Please wear sturdy water shoes (no flip flops) and clothes that can get wet and muddy. Don’t forget sunscreen, a towel, and drinking water. All equipment will be provided.

Meet at the Bluebird Barn and we’ll walk about 1 mile together to the river access, then about another mile back when we are finished. Recommended for kids ages 6–12, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost of the program is $5 per kid.
