Stranger Eyes

(Yeo Siew Hua, 2024, Singapore/Taiwan/France/USA, 127 minutes)

Surveillance thrillers have long existed—think Rear Window, Blow Up, Caché, The Conversation—so it feels odd that we haven’t seen more of them lately, in an era where everyone has a camera in their hands at all times, security cameras are everywhere, and we are always posting our every movement and activity, no matter how mundane. In Singaporean writer/director Yeo Siew Hua’s Stranger Eyes, young, estranged couple Peiying and Junyang have a two-year-old daughter, Little Bo, who goes missing. Around the same time, a mysterious neighbor (/stalker?) played by Webster Film Series favorite Lee Kang-sheng starts dropping off creepy videos on DVD at their residence, establishing himself as a prime suspect in the daughter’s disappearance. Structurally ambitious and difficult to predict, Stranger Eyes is an overdue thriller reckoning with the way we currently live.

In Mandarin with English subtitles.
