Climate Café - A Critique of Work and a Post-Work Politics with Maja Hoffmann

In 1930, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that his grandchildren would work just 15 hours a week - thanks to technological advances boosting productivity. Nearly a century later, his forecast on productivity was spot on, yet the average work week remains unchanged. Meanwhile, ecological destruction has accelerated, and global temperatures continue to break records year after year. Coincidence? - or consequence? 💥

Join us at this Climate Café as Maja Hoffmann, researcher at the University of Economics in Vienna, will take us on a deep dive into the unsustainability of modern-day work. For us she will unpack the ‘jobs-environment-dilemma’ - how environmental concerns are often sidelined in favor of job preservation, creating a lock-in situation with seemingly no alternatives.

We will explore:
• the measurable environmental impacts of modern-day work as a principal driver of ecological destruction and climate change
• the cultural and structural causes behind the ‘jobs-environment-dilemma’
• existing post-work politics and practice for a sustainable future and more meaningful work

This event invites us to rethink the role of work in our lives and its significance for a climate-friendly future 🌍
