Very few documentaries ever achieve the cult film status of Chris Smith’s American Movie. Filmed between September 1995 and August 1997 in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, American Movie chronicles the efforts of newspaper delivery man and aspiring filmmaker Mark Borchardt to complete his horror film Coven. Like Lost in La Mancha or Joderowsky’s Dune set in the Midwest, Borchardt preservers through numerous setbacks, including economic hardship, poor planning, alcoholism, and the ineptitude of the friends he enlists as his production team.
Hilarious, eccentric, and sometimes sad, American Movie won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Amy Goodman of IndieWire called the film “an inspiration for filmmakers everywhere.” American Movie is a must watch for rural artists trying to break out and for anyone with a creative passion.
