In keeping with our theme this year, examining the ancient elements of Fire (April), Water (May and June), Earth (July and August), and Air [weather] (September), this month our topic is soil, namely "Managing Soil as an Ecosystem". Soil is not just dirt. Good soil is a thriving ecosystem of organisms that recycle nutrients, regulate water, and trap carbon dioxide. Growing thriving plants above requires an understanding of what is going on below. This month, we are fortunate to have Jane Duke, PhD, come speak with us. Jane, a soil expert, is on the Board of the Elm Fork Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists and is the NICE coordinator for the Trinity Forks NPSOT group. See the rest of her credentials on our chapter home page at https://txmn.org/hillcountry/.
