The workshop will introduce the basics of sleep science. We will cover the circadian clock, sleep drive and the sleep homeostat, and talk about some neurotransmitters and hormones associated with sleep. Then we will cover the benefits of good sleep, and its opposite- the consequences of poor or insufficient sleep.
This will segue into a discussion about insomnia, and its causes and lifetime prevalence, as well as treatment options, and a detailed discussion on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Sleep (CBT-I), which is globally recommended as the first-line, gold standard solution for chronic insomnia.
The seminar will then move on to a list of best practices for sleep. We will conclude with a longer Q&A session.
About Kevin Abery:
Kevin is a sleep therapist and educator, with an academic background in neuroscience and psychology. He spent 8 years as a clinical and research sleep scientist in Melbourne, Australia in both private and public hospital settings. He recently established SleepcareCBT, a therapy service specializing in CBT-I for the treatment of chronic insomnia.
