John is a McDowell County native and former member of the seminal Rochester, New York-based group Soul Brothers Six back in the 1960s. Ellison is a talented and successful songwriter best known for writing the song "Some Kind of Wonderful." The song was a Top 10 hit for Grand Funk Railroad in 1974. To date, the song has sold more than 42 million copies and has been covered by more than 70 artists.
