Paddle and Ponder the Patapsco

Join us for a unique on-the-water experience that invites you to explore the future of the Patapsco River while canoeing its scenic stretch near Daniels Dam. Guided by a representative from American Rivers, a national nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring rivers, this paddle offers an engaging opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the Daniels Dam Feasibility Study.

Led by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in partnership with American Rivers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the feasibility study is evaluating the future of the aging Daniels Dam, an effort that includes exploring repair and removal options while considering community input and ecological priorities.

As we paddle, you’ll learn about the broader Patapsco River Restoration Project, which has already removed three outdated dams, resulting in healthier ecosystems, improved safety, and economic benefits for nearby communities. This stretch of the river is now home to more abundant wildlife and offers safer recreation for all who enjoy Patapsco Valley State Park.

Throughout the paddle, your guides will lead informal conversations about river restoration, dam safety, and what’s at stake for the Patapsco’s future. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions, share your thoughts, and learn how you can get involved in shaping what comes next.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, local resident, or simply curious about the future of this iconic river, this is your chance to paddle, reflect, and take part in an important community conversation.
