In the year 2286, an alien probe emitting a mysterious signal threatens to end all life on Earth. The intrepid crew of the USS Enterprise recognizes the probe’s signal as the call of a humpback whale, a species that went extinct in the 21st century. Using an interstellar flight technique to go back in time, the crew arrives in 1986 San Francisco to find a pair of humpback whales and brings them back to the future in the hopes of saving humanity. Directed by Leonard Nimoy (Spock), this installment in the Star Trek franchise centers themes of interspecies relationships and environmentalism. 1986, US, 122 min.
