Moose on the Move
Tuesday, August 12th, 6:30 pm.
Donations Welcome.
Although moose were native to the U.P., by the turn of the 20th century they had been eliminated by logging, hunting, and disease. In the 1980s the Department of Natural Resources developed a bold plan to bring moose from Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario to a suitable habitat in northwestern Marquette County. The moose were tranquilized by sharpshooters, lifted by helicopter off of frozen lakes, and trucked to the U.P., where hundreds of people, including Michigan's governor, watched them be released.
Ann Hilton Fisher, first prepared this presentation, which includes photos and videos of the operation, for the U.P Regional History Conference held in Sault Ste Marie in June 2024.
