ChoralFest: Dvořák Stabat Mater

Composed in the wake of personal tragedy, Dvořák’s setting of the 13th-century Latin hymn is a luminous meditation on grief, compassion, and hope. Lyrical, dramatic, and with richly moving harmonies, the work moves through sorrow and stillness to radiant consolation, embodying a journey that resonates with all who sing and listen.

This final performance brings together the full forces of the ChoralFest chorus, conducted by our celebrated choral maestro Gavin Carr, with a stellar quartet of soloists drawn from the heart of the week’s recital series: Sophie Bevan MBE (soprano), Victoria Simmonds (mezzo-soprano), Nicholas Scott (tenor), and James Platt (bass).

The Stabat Mater offers a fitting close to ChoralFest — a communal act of music-making that honours the voice not only as a vehicle for beauty, but as an expression of shared humanity.

As the sun sets over the Dartington Estate, this final concert invites all who have sung, played, listened and learned throughout the week to come together in one last offering: solemn, generous, and transcendent.
