Creating Three Dimensional Molds, Textures and Sculptural Elements in Encaustic with Jennifer Young

The art of storytelling using encaustic three-dimensional molds and sculptural constructs has always been central to my art practice. The physical and tactile ability to mold elements, objects and even ideas using encaustic is, I believe, one of the most powerful properties of using this material.

In this workshop we will explore how to create a range of molds from very basic to fairly complex structures. We will create a series of molds in modeling clay using a range of simple everyday items and objects. Each mold will then be filled with wax and may, depending on size and weight, require using textiles to create anchors/hinges. Finally, the completed molds will be attached to encaustic coated panels.

The objects we will be molding will range in size from sea shells to objects the size of your hand. Items that will fit on a 10 inch by 10 inch panel board. We will discuss creating the physical mold, layering colours, cleaning the wax once removed from the clay, and surface painting using pan pastels and hot wax. You will need to have some experience working in encaustic and using a variety of small carving and scraping tools.
