Ohio & Erie Canal Cleanup at Summit Lake

Canal Cleanups offers users of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail the opportunity to keep our natural spaces healthy and thriving for generations to come. On average, more than 3 tons of trash have been removed annually since the program began in the early 2000s, transforming destinations along the trail like Summit Lake and the aqueduct bridge in Bolivar. All are welcome, from adults to children, as we build stewardship of our recreational and natural spaces throughout the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area.
The cleanup will be held at Summit Lake Park in Akron from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. Snacks/water, trash bags, gloves and grabbers are provided. Please wear appropriate shoes/clothing for the weather. All participants must sign an agreement, waiver and release form located in the online registration. Parking is available at the Summit Lake Community Center at 380 W. Crosier Street or the Reach Opportunity Center at 390 W. Crosier Street. Check in at the park pavilion.
The August 2, 2025 Canal Cleanup is in collaboration with Keep Akron Beautiful, Summit Soil & Water Conservation District, Riverkeepers Ohio and Ward 9 Councilperson Tina Boyes.
