Usada Bali is honored to premiere the recently restored version of this legendary ethnographic film that captures the essence of Balinese culture as it was almost 100 years ago. THE ISLAND OF DEMONS (1933) directed by Friedrich Dalsheim (1895-1936), shot in Bali, when the island was part of the Dutch East Indies. Partly due to the presence of artist Walter Spies (1895-1942) it quickly became the most popular destination for Western scholars and artists such as Vicki Baum and Charlie Chaplin. To this day, THE ISLAND OF DEMONS remains a unique ethnographic and historic document of Balinese culture and above all, its dances such as the Kecak dance, Sanghyang Dedari and Legong dances. The film is an extraordinary object of study for shared anthropology, primarily because Dalsheim and his team did not come to Bali with a prepared screenplay, but wrote it on site and in collaboration after months of field research.
Usada Bali is deeply grateful to Louise Von Plessen as well as the team at Deutsche Kinemathek deutsche-kinemathek.de/ewerk. As well Usada Bali would like to acknowledge Victoria Von Plessen who before her passing donated these films to the deutsche-kinemathek.
