Presented in collaboration with the University of Iowa String Quartet and Woodwind Ensemble Residency Programs

Ensembles from different traditions share a passion for two of music’s towering figures.

Jeff Scott was a founding horn player of the wind quintet Imani Winds and created the Grammy-winning oratorio Passion for Bach and Coltrane. The current Imani Winds ensemble, the Harlem Quartet, and a jazz trio come together to perform the piece at The Englert. A.B. Spellman—a poet, music critic, arts administrator, and legend of the Black Arts Movement—will provide the stirring oration at the heart of the work.

PROGRAM:
Jeffrey SCOTT: Passion for Bach and Coltrane
An eight-movement suite for wind quintet, string quartet, jazz trio, and orator

“The signature contribution of this group [is] a technical ease with extravagant gestures, intense production of sound, and the daring expressive liberties that come only after musicians have developed a sixth sense of ensemble-bonding. Imani’s got it all.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

“[A]n assured technique, a vibrant tone and, yes, enough energy to be harnessed as a new source of green power.” – NPR on Harlem Quartet
