When a complex radio transmission is detected from nearby star Vega, the search for alien life suddenly becomes more of a reality. At the center of this search is Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster), a scientist working on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence who decodes the signal, revealing that it contains plans for a technologically advanced machine that can transport one person to Vega.
