Swan - An Afternoon Reflection

Join Swan Trustees and Trainees for a look back at Swan’s varied life as a fishing boat, a house boat, a near wreck and a sail training vessel, as the exhibition at Shetland Museum & Archives concludes.

John Goodlad, well-known local author and fishing industry expert, will give a summary of the first 96 years – covering the successful fishing career and various other uses of the boat before her near demise in Hartlepool in the 1980s. John will also delve into the fascinating process of the full restoration from 1900–1996 which saw Swan return to the water in full splendour as a sail training vessel.

Mary Irvine, Chair of the Swan Trust SCIO, will discuss the current work of the boat and the different groups and individuals who benefit from the experiences on board. This will be followed by a first hand account of the on-board adventures of sail trainee and Vevoe Trophy winner 2023, Colleen Grains.

A Q&A session will be offered with all speakers taking part, joined by a descendent of one of the original crew members – John William Simpson of Vevoe, Whalsay.

This is a free event to attend, though donations to the Trust to maintain boat operations will be gratefully accepted on the door. Booking in advance is recommended as spaces are limited.
