Erev Shabbat with KS Members Sharon Gillett & David Luberoff

Join us for a poetry-themed Shabbat service! We’ll hear a bit about Chaim Nachman Bialik, an influential Jewish poet born in Ukraine in 1873 who settled in Tel Aviv in 1924. Bialik wrote poetry in Hebrew long before it became the spoken language of the Jewish community in Israel. We’ll welcome Shabbat by learning a melody for his poem Shabbat Hamalkah (The Sabbath Queen). Shir HaLev has the words for us, in Hebrew, transliteration, and rhythmically correct English! We’ll reflect on Bialik’s blending of the traditional and the modern and how that matches up with our own practices and thinking today.
