Luncheon with Jim Dodson, "The Road That Made America"

The Road That Made America is a lively, epic account of one of the greatest untold stories in our nation’s history – the eight-hundred-mile long Great Wagon Road that 18th-century American settlers forged from Philadelphia to Augusta, Georgia. Often following the older Native American Trading Path, the Great Wagon Road became the primary road of frontier America, and in the middle-1700s it facilitated the mass migration of European settlers into the colonial backcountry of Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas.

In this engaging history Jim Dodson follows the original road’s path from Philadelphia to Georgia crossing six states. His lecture will focus on this research with emphasis on the Great Wagon Road’s impact on the settlement of Piedmont North Carolina and historic Alamance County.
