LOS CHAVOS (Biography)
Los Chavos are Canberra’s long-standing champions of Latin ska and reggae, delivering high-energy, genre-bending performances for over 15 years. Formed in the mid-2000s, the band quickly carved out a unique niche in the Australian music scene with their infectious blend of Latin rhythms, powerful horn lines, and socially conscious lyrics sung in both Spanish and English.
Their 2012 album SuperMeng marked a defining moment for the group, showcasing their evolution from a fiery live act to accomplished recording artists. The album weaves together cumbia, dub, timba, merengue, and chacarera, all underpinned by their ska/reggae foundation – creating a sound that is as danceable as it is politically resonant. Los Chavos draw inspiration from the likes of Manu Chao, Calle 13, and traditional Afro-Latin forms, channeling these influences through their own distinctly urban Australian-Latin identity.
Whether lighting up stages at festivals or holding down intimate club gigs, Los Chavos are known for uniting diverse crowds with their driving rhythms and compelling live energy. As pioneers of original urban Latin music in Australia, their mission has always been clear: to move bodies, stir minds, and celebrate cultural connection through music.
