Surface Design Workshop: Using Slips & Underglazes

In this one day workshop, participants will be shown various surface design techniques using leather hard clay, slip, and underglaze. Techniques that will be covered will include sgraffito, inlay, screen printing, layering, and resist. These techniques lend themselves well for patterns, illustration, and representational or abstract designs. Participants will be given pre-made tiles to try each technique and are encouraged to bring in leather hard pieces of their own which they can decorate during the workshop. Participants are also encouraged to come with source imagery that can be transferred to the clay using carbon copy paper or by tracing.

Surface Design is an intermediate-level class - some prior clay experience is required. Students should have a basic knowledge of the stages of clay.
