Garden Cafe and Reform Dallas cordially invite you to attend a reading and discussion with award-winning authors Michael Phillips and Betty Friauf about their new book,

Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, 32 states passed laws allowing involuntary sterilization on those deemed biologically โ€œunfitโ€: convicted criminals, the disabled, the poor, and people of color. Texas, despite a history of violent racism, was not one of them. In ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‹๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™›๐™ฎ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™†๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™›๐™š, Michael Phillips and Betsy Friauf explore this curious instance of the Lone Star Stateโ€™s exceptionalism. The first history of the eugenics movement in Texas, it is a narrative that intersects with debates over race, immigration, abortion, the role of women in society, homosexuality, medical ethics, and the politics of disability in the stateโ€”debates resonating today in Texas and beyond.

Please join us on Sunday, July 27, 7p, at Garden Cafe in East Dallas, 5310 Junius St. Copies of ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‹๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™›๐™ฎ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™†๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™›๐™š will be available for purchase. Light bites and drinks will be available from Garden Cafe.
