The first hour is devoted to the presentation and the second hour to writer submissions. Our presenter, Mary Patterson, has been writing since kindergarten. Among her most notable efforts are a hand lettered neighborhood newspaper (one page, one copy, one edition), a stack of mystery stories without endings written after she learned touch typing in 8th grade, and occasional lines of poetry. Once, but just once, she was paid $3 for a single poem, but never again. Throughout her teaching career, she encouraged her students to write and illustrate their own stories. Along the way, she attended the 3-week, lesser-known Iowa Writing Project designed especially for teachers. At some time in the distant past, she learned a method of assessing writing which looks beyond the usual mechanical errors and promotes positive guidance for developing a writer’s craft. Her topic will be an introduction to that method — The Six Traits of Effective Writing, a tool she hopes will be useful for others.
