Canaan Historical Marker Unveiling - Noyes Academy

In partnership with Sarah Dunkerton, Old North Church, and the Canaan Historical Society, Black Heritage Trail will be hosting a marker unveiling honoring the Noyes Academy!
In the summer of 1835, Noyes Academy in Canaan, NH made history as one of the first interracial and co-ed schools in the U.S. But just months after opening, local mobs—angered by its integration—used oxen to drag the school building off its foundation and drove out its Black students. Though short-lived, the academy’s legacy lives on as a powerful symbol of resistance, courage, and the fight for equal education.
