Higher yoga has been defined as the higher limbs of yoga that relate directly to the steps of meditation and superior concentration. When a single thought construct is spontaneously and continuously repeated in the mind for a length of time, this higher yogic attainment is defined as meditation.

Indeed, a deeply held prayer is also in the realm of meditation. When meditation attains depth such that the world is forgotten and the mind merges with the object of meditation, such voluntarily manifested concentration is called samadhi, or intense concentration. Attainment of such levels of concentration enables the ardent practitioner to tangibly experience the results of self-empowerment in other facets of life.

Practitioners of this form of mental clarity achieve a steady meditative lifestyle through unwavering self-discipline in their consistent yoga practice. This discipline entails patient repetition of breathing techniques, neuro-muscular relaxation, postural stretches, sublime chanting, and devotion to God. These components develop a process which coalesce into a daily routine and the aspirant experiences upliftment from progressive self-empowerment.

Yoga Philosophy affirms that self-realization or the wisdom gathered from inescapable knowledge of one’s true nature is only possible with unfailing practice of disciplinary exercises of the body and mind.

Higher yoga is practised with an aim to attain salvation or freedom from afflictions by understanding the root causes of suffering and realizing the supreme principal of God. The process of self-empowerment is then essentially the deepening meditation to the level of intense concentration.

The ability to stop fluctuations of the mind at-will that is acquired through persistent practice, either in the spirit of inner renunciation or with deep devotion to God, is known as higher yoga. In an advanced state of meditation, it is possible to develop singular concentration, which is a self-empowered state necessary for human evolution.

Two important features highlight the quintessential definition of Yoga: 1) the willful suppression of mental fluctuations and internal chatter, and 2) Consistent and earnest practice that develops into a habit—not for gaining a personal end goal of success, but rather in the spirit of inner renunciation or devotion to God.

The orator, His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda, who is a Himalayan siddha and monk, will highlight key aspects of self-empowerment through yoga and meditation and guide a short meditation after the discourse before the blessing line at the end of the fellowship.

Unique to this Fellowship is the history behind the space. Back in 1893, Swami Vivekananda was among the first to introduce Vedic spiritual teachings of the East to the US with his historic appearance at the Unitarian Church, planting seeds of yogic wisdom that continue to blossom today. Over 130 years later, His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda is returning to the very same sanctuary. This is not mere coincidence, but multiple generations of sharing a spiritual lineage and living tradition. The fellowship honours the legacy of Vedic teachings and is a unique opportunity to receive blessings, wisdom, and inspiration in the same sacred space once graced by a historical spiritual pioneer.
