Skill Builder – Traditional Frame Joinery Woodwork Course

Skill Builders are in-depth, hands-on courses designed for those ready to dive deeper into a specific craft discipline. Whether you’re developing your skills for personal practice or working toward becoming a Benchspace Maker, these courses focus on building confidence, technique, and creative independence through guided, project-based learning.

Interested in traditional hand tool woodworking?

Focusing entirely on hand tool use, this 12-week course is the perfect introduction to traditional frame construction techniques, and teaches the core skills needed to build the structural frames that form the backbone of furniture making - such as drawer frames, carcass construction, and supporting structures.
Guided by experienced tutor Martin, you’ll receive extensive hands-on instruction in traditional methods used in classical furniture making. Students will begin by learning fundamental joinery and hand skills, including marking out, planing, sawing, and morticing with bench chisels. Then you'll progress towards mastering the mortice and tenon joint, developing skills through the use of halving and bridle joints along the way. These techniques will then be applied to create an Arts & Crafts style picture frame from hardwood, and the project will conclude with surface preparation, assembly, and finishing.

The skills gained in this class, all without the use of power tools, will provide a solid foundation for learners who wish to undertake larger projects in furniture and wood construction in the future.
